The Story Behind This
In this vibrant underwater , a glides effortlessly through the coral reef as tropical fish and other colorful float about. This scene was inspired by the Hawaiian experiences of the artist, Karen Whitworth. One such occasion was off the of , near black rock at Kaanapali , when a much like the one in this joined the artist for a lazy swim among the coral. The colors of that day, the sensation of weightlessness, and the company of such a beautiful , still bring her joy many years later.

The , (which is the Hawaiian word for ), are common throughout all the . In traditional Hawaiian culture they represent long life and good fortune. Often viewed on the , resting in the sand, the female will also use this as a location to dig her . After hatching, the babies face many dangers in the years that follow. Thanks to efforts and federal protections prohibiting people from harming them, their numbers are now increasing.
Our favorite place to learn about this beautiful is at the Center. In addition to all the other they have on display, there is also an exhibit of juvenile turtles. Also known by their scientific name as , these baby turtles are more cute than you can possibly imagine. It's an excellent opportunity to see these beautiful creatures up close and personal while supporting an organization that is doing great things to protect them.
